The only full-length musical comedy at this year’s Fringe Festival,
CLEAVE is based on startling medieval commentaries about The Book of Genesis. Folks who are scandalized by this conceptual play about the creation of the world and our mythic prototypes can blame those stodgy rabbis from the Middle Ages for the pre-op hermaphrodites, incompetent angels, Biblical love triangles, and brushes with bestiality. The book and lyrics are literate and funny, the music eclectic and moving. Seductive cha-cha, baroque lamentation, and vaudevillian waltz perfectly suit the needs of the sorority girl Eve, the barren demon Lilith, and the clueless newborn Adam. Laugh with (and at) our ancestors as they grow up and move out of Eden.
